A comprehensive guide to getting replacement parts for your wood heater

At Albany Eco House, we’re dedicated to helping you keep your wood heater in safe working order by assisting in sourcing parts. This guide will walk you through the most common replacement parts for wood heaters, how to identify your unit, and what to do if a part is no longer available.

Common replacement parts for wood heaters

  1. Baffle

The baffle plate goes inside the wood heater. It is commonly made of steel and is a flat or curved plate that sits in the top of firebox to prevent your flue from direct flame and increases the efficiency of the heater. We keep certain models in stock and can order many others in. Learn more about baffle plates here.

  1. Door handles

The handle used to open and close the door of your wood heater is often made of bakelite or wood and over time they can crack or become worn. People may also choose to replace the handle simply to refresh the appearance of the unit.

  1. Door glass or a new door

The glass window in the door of your wood heater may crack over time or by accidental force. We keep certain models in stock and can order parts for many others. To remove the door from your unit, open it at a 45 degree angle and lift it off the hinges.

  1. Glass tape

A high-temperature tape used to seal the glass to the door frame, ensuring that no smoke or heat escapes. It is made with fibreglass, so care should be taken to clean the site where you removed and replaced the tape.

  1. Door rope

A heat-resistant rope that lines the door to create a seal. It prevents air from leaking out and ensures optimal burning efficiency. Over time, the rope may become compacted or coated in ash which may affect the quality of the seal. It is made with fibreglass, so care should be taken to clean the site where you removed and replaced the tape.

  1. Flue

Flues can become blocked or damaged and should be regularly services or replaced if damaged. Single lengths of 1m flue can be purchased separately, or entire flue kits are available. Standard flue diameter is 6 inch. Other sizes may be in stock in limited variety or they can be ordered in for you.

  1. Cowl

A cover for the top of the flue outside that helps to prevent rain and debris from entering the flue while allowing smoke to escape. There are multiple types including anti-downdraft, venturi and standard.

  1. Bricks

Firebricks line the inside of the firebox and absorb and radiate heat. They can crack or become damaged with use and may need replacing. While there are standard brick sizes, about half of the models we carry have custom brick sizes and may need to be ordered in. Not all units use fire bricks. Some have alternatives to bricks such as steel plates or vermiculite liners.

Identifying Your Wood Heater

If you’re unsure of your heater’s make and model, we'll need to do some sleuthing together. Here’s how you can help us identify your unit to ensure you get the correct replacement parts:

Photographs: Email info@albanyecohouse.com.au or text us clear photos of:

  • The front of the unit
  • The part that needs replacing
  • The inside of the unit
  • The information plate on the back (for inbuilt fires, a photo of the front and inside will suffice)

Make year: Provide the year you purchased the unit, or the best approximation you have. Models can change from year to year, so this information may affect what part is ordered.

What If Parts Are No Longer Available?

In the event that a specific part is no longer in production, we can direct you to local tradespeople who can custom-make the part for you. This is often a viable option when dealing with older models or discontinued parts.

Alternatively, if your wood heater has not been regularly serviced or is showing signs wear and tear, it might be safer and more cost-effective to consider investing in a new unit. Regular maintenance is key to extending the life of your heater, and sometimes a new unit can be a more efficient and reliable option.
